Overview

Novel Object Recognition (NOR) is a classic spontaneous assay of recognition memory. Based on novelty preference, one familiar object is replaced with a novel one; differences in exploration time reflect memory for the familiar object and discrimination of the new one.

NOR is used for recognition-memory mechanisms, cognitive impairment models (e.g., AD), hippocampal and prefrontal function, psychiatric models (e.g., schizophrenia), and screening of cognitive enhancers or neuroprotectants.

Methods

  1. 1Training: Explore two identical objects for 10 min; score nose/paw exploration and location preference (~50% is expected). Clean the arena and objects with 75% ethanol between animals to remove odor cues.
  2. 2Test (1 h later): Replace one object with a novel shape. Explore for 10 min and compute recognition and discrimination indices from exploration times.
